Lightweight steel fuel tanks from NovaNox®

In contrast to otherwise common fuel tanks, lightweight NovaNox® fuel tanks are made of high-quality thin sheet steel. This feature allows significant weight savings, especially in automotive and aerospace applications. The reduced weight reduces fuel consumption and the resulting operating costs.

Despite the lightweight construction, our steel fuel tanks made with thin sheet are very stable. This quality feature is confirmed by our own welding process planning.

Manufacturing process

Manual welding

As a welding company, we employ qualified personnel and have many years of experience in welding technology. In addition to the automated welding process, we also manufacture hand-welded steel fuel tanks. This manual welding process pays off for one-offs as well as small and medium-sized series due to lower costs and quick turnaround times. We manufacture the hand-welded steel fuel tanks on modern welding tables. Dimensional accuracy is ensured by our own fixture construction. In addition, precision is permanently met even with high tolerances.



Automated welding

We use state-of-the-art welding robots for automated welding. The automated manufacturing process enables very fast and efficient production. These are ideal prerequisites if high demands are to be produced cost-effectively with permanently consistent quality. The automated welding process offers the highest precision among the various methods of welding. This means that even very complex steel fuel tanks with high tolerance requirements can be produced.

Corrosion protection and finishes for steel fuel tanks

Surface treatments make the exterior of steel fuel tanks more attractive and promote their safety and durability. A durable rust-free, safe and resistant surface supports a long service life of the steel fuel tanks. With our own powder coating and painting facility, we can provide surface treatments in all RAL colors quickly and in high quality. For optimal corrosion protection, we offer heat-resistant painting, powder coating as well as pickling and passivation.

You want to be on the safe side during the test phases and also after your customers have put your product into operation. That's why we use FEM calculations to examine the structural strength, fatigue strength and material efficiency of your concept, among other things, in the early development phases. In doing so, we digitally present the consequences of various mechanical, thermal and electrical effects by means of linear and non-linear structural-mechanical calculations. This enables us to recognize the effects of the various influences on the entire product or component for any geometries, even complex ones, even before we build prototypes.

The results of these calculations also serve you as evidence for technical approvals, for product liability and production releases.

FEM calculations by NovaNox are performed analytically according to general and international standards. This ensures comparability and reliable results. In detail we do for you

  • linear and non-linear structural mechanics calculations
  • Analysis of deformations, stiffnesses and stability
  • Consideration of natural vibrations
  • Transient structural analysis
  • Collision analyses
  • Temperature field calculation (thermal-stationary or thermal-transient)

You will receive technical drawings from us in 2D (in dxf, dwg and pdf formats) and in 3D (in step format). Depending on your needs, we will produce individual part drawings, assembly drawings, general drawings or assembly drawings for you. In addition, you will receive detailed technical documentation for your review. This gives you the chance to adjust things or introduce special requests before production. This gives you maximum security that everything will fit perfectly and be implemented without errors as soon as the production line starts rolling.

With these comprehensive technical drawings and complete documentation, communication across your entire development and manufacturing process chain functions precisely. You cover the different information needs of each process stage and thus achieve greater efficiency.

From the very beginning, we work closely with you in the development, planning and design of the construction, the material and the manufacturing process. This is because we aim for a result that is as close to series production as possible, even in the prototype phase. This produces the best results and supports compliance with your time and cost planning.

For the final touches, we analyze the results of the FAI and adjust the manufacturing process for the highest possible efficiency and cost-effectiveness. In doing so, we help to significantly shorten the start-up phase and successfully mass produce according to plan. This is easy on your project budget and offers you comprehensive security.

From demand planning to logistics, we take over the complete processing for you. We provide you with a total of 1,200 square meters of storage space as a consignment warehouse. This ensures uninterrupted production processes and reduces your costs. On the one hand, you save money compared to your own storage capacities. On the other hand, you can manufacture in larger production quantities more cost-effectively.

Your worry-free component supply for series production is thus assured. Your steel fuel tanks can be delivered from the consignment warehouse on schedule and flexibly on demand. Quality management

Based on the welding process planning, the optimum welding procedure is selected for the specific requirements of your steel fuel tanks. Using the right process increases the safety and stability of your steel fuel tanks.

Welding process planning also determines and specifies the welding sequence. On the one hand, the optimum sequence of welding operations ensures more efficient production processes. On the other hand, it ensures a longer service life and reliable leak tightness of your steel fuel tanks.

As part of our quality management, the leak test gives you the assurance that your steel fuel tanks will remain absolutely leak-proof even in continuous operation and under extreme conditions. As additional security, we are happy to provide the leak test for each delivery as a written declaration of conformity. You can quickly and easily integrate this NovaNox® test certificate into your overall documentation. We carry out these leak tests for you:

  • Using our own test basin, we carry out a 100% test with air underwater, following regulations like ECE R34 or 70/21/EEC
  • Pressure test
  • Leak test by means of red or fluorescent dyes
  • Ultrasonic testing

Precise documentation of production processes is important for quality assurance in production. This is because it ensures the high quality of your products.  Complete documentation also offers enormous cost-cutting potential, especially for large projects, because errors and quality deviations can be detected and eliminated at an early stage.
